Everyone on this earth experiences the strain of stress. Stress is the most serious problem of the modern age. Thousands of things affect our lives and make us stressful. Stress correlates with every change. When the body reacts to an event or a situation, it gets emotionally disturbed. Serious stress occurs and affects the body and mind when events are unpredicted. Stressors are real-life events that require physical, mental and spiritual adjustments. Ayurveda, a medical system of India which has been practiced for more than 6,000 years, prescribes various treatments for stress-related problems. Ayurveda says that stress is a state where the mind becomes imbalanced and affects the body. The mind loses its balance due to some reason and is agitated. Hence treatment is given to balance the vitiation in the humors. The system suggests avoidance of situations that may aggravate stress. Vata humor is aggravated by anxiety, fear, distracted attention and so on. Pitta dosha is aggravated by anger, aggression, dominating behavior, envy and so on. Kapha is aggravated by greed, jealousy,lust, etc. If the stress accompanies any illness treatment for that illness is also given. 3) Diet is an important part of Ayurvedic treatment. A stressful person should choose foods that increase "sattva" (pure and normal condition) and reduce stress. It suggests fresh fruits and vegetables. Sprouts, nuts, dry fruits, honey, milk, ghee and buttermilk are very effective in increasing sattva. Stimulating foods such as tea, coffee, processed foods, white sugar products and hot spices. 4) Breathing is another effective remedy in reducing stress. A stressed person may have short and shallow breathing. Deep breathing can reduce his stress and relax his body and mind. 5) Applying oil on the whole body (Abhyanga) at least once a week may help a person who is suffering from chronic stress.
