Clove Oil is used by oral surgeons in cases of dry socket, due to the extraction of wisdom teeth. Clove oil can also be used for ordinary toothaches as well.

At the age of 33, I decided to undergo wisdom teeth extraction. I was urged to have the procedure completed when I was younger and didn’t follow the oral surgeon’s advice. As a result, my bottom right wisdom tooth developed a cavity and was hitting nerves close to the jaw bone. Three days following the surgery, I developed dry socket and had to return to the dentist. Dry socket usually occurs several days following the wisdom teeth extraction. It’s quite painful and makes healing a much slower process.

How do you know you have dry socket?

Dry socket begins as a sudden increase in throbbing pain which is not relieved by pain medications. If you are experiencing these symptoms, your dentist will urge you to come to the office and they will place medicated gauze soaked in an infused oil substance in the dry socket. When I went back after suffering these terrible symptoms, the oral surgeon placed medicated gauze into the socket, which within a matter of hours, dissolved the pain. A few later days I had the gauze removed and felt little to no pain. I thought I was in the clear, but hours later the pain came back worse than before. I didn’t want to have to keep returning to the dentist, so I decided to concoct a remedy myself. I’ve had years of experience creating infused oils with my restaurants, so I thought the procedure would be a breeze.

Clove Oil Recipe

Clove oil

  • 2 Tablespoons of cloves (Powdered)
  • ¼ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Aluminum foil
  • Glass jar or small container which can withstand boiled water.
  • Saucepan with strainer or double boiler
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 Coffee filter
  • 1 Piece of String

1) Lay the coffee filter flat and place the cloves in the middle.

2) Gather the sides of the filter and make a sachet (a disposable one time use package).

3) Tie off the sachet with a piece of string.

4) Pour the olive oil into the glass jar or container.

5) Place the sachet in the olive oil.

6) Cover the container with aluminum foil. Be sure to make the aluminum cover concave.

7) Place the container into the saucepan of boiling water.

8) Cover the pan with aluminum foil.

9) Boil for 40 minutes. Then remove from the pan.

10) Let oil cool until room temperature.

Special Notes:

Boil your water first while you are preparing your sachet. You can use the oil for immediate pain relieve or some people will allow the oil to sit for a week, creating a much stronger natural medication for tooth pain due to wisdom teeth extraction. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can use a strainer or colander, which sits in a saucepan. The key is that you want the steam to be able to circulate.

How do I apply the Clove Oil?

There are several ways in which to apply the clove oil. You can use your finger tip, but I urge you to use some sort of sterilized tool or a cotton swab. I prefer using tweezers which have been boiled in hot water for at least one minute to kill germs. I then will take a gauze pad and cut small ¼ inch strips with a sterilized pair of scissors. Dip the strip of gauze into the oil and shake off any excess. Carefully place the gauze into the socket with the sterilized tweezers. Or if you don’t want to do it yourself, have a friend or spouse apply the gauze. Just make sure they have steady hands!

Tip

  • A little goes a long way. The oil is quite strong, so a small drop to a cotton bud is quite enough to relieve pain.
  • Try not to get the oil on your skin. You may experience a burning or numbing feeling if you do.

How long should I keep the medicated gauze in the socket?

You shouldn’t keep the medicated clove oil gauze in the socket for more than a few days, three at the maximum. After removing the gauze, wait a few hours to see how your tooth feels. If the pain starts to come back, apply another strip of gauze to the dry socket. If you smoke, you will have to replace the socket with a new gauze after every cigarette. My advice is not to smoke. I know it's hard, as I smoke myself, but the leading cause of dry socket is smoking.

Is Clove Oil toxic if ingested?

In this case no. You are only applying a very minimul amount to the affected area. Furthermore, if you are using the buds and stems of the clove to make the oil, there is no fear of toxicity. Many manufacturers, however, use the leaves of clove plants to make oil. In this case, you can get terribly ill. Some peopple will suffer from stomach aches or vomiting.

How fast does it take the Clove Oil to work?

When I apply it to the affected area, it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours, for the pain to subside. It works differently for every individual. I just applied a medicated gauze to the affected area while writing this article, and within 7 minutes, the area felt 100% better.
