The knees are the largest and among the most complicated joints of our body. Knee pain is the most common musculoskeletal complaint that brings people to their doctor. Because knees are used so frequently and carry a lot of body weight, they are susceptible to developing pain over the course of time. Knee pain usually results from overuse of the knee joint, poor posture during physical activity, not warming up or cooling down, inadequate stretching or injuries. The location and severity of knee pain may vary depending on the cause of the problem. There are many beneficial home remedies available for achieving knee pain relief. A number of natural home remedies for Knee pain and various knee exercises can help relieve the pain and heal the condition effectively. Home remedies for knee pain rely on the causes and symptoms of knee pain. Pain, swelling, and inability to extend the leg are all common symptoms of a possible knee injury. Knee pain is common among athletes and among the elderly population.

Cause of Knee Pain

Knee pain is an extremely common complaint, and there are many causes. While it is easy to cure knee pain, you need to know the actual cause behind your knee pain. Treatment of knee pain must be directed at the specific cause of knee pain. If you have knee pain, some common causes include

Ligament Injuries

Cartilage Injuries - Meniscal Tear

Patellar Tendon inflammation

Chondromalacia of the Patella – Irritation of Underside of Kneecap

Dislocating Kneecap

Baker’s Cyst

Bursitis – Inflammation of Bursa

Plica Syndrome

Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Osteochondritis Dissecans

Try to identify the cause of the pain. Treatment of knee pain must be directed at the specific cause of your problem.

Symptoms of Knee pain

Some signs and symptoms of knee pain that you should be seen by a doctor include:

Inability to walk comfortably on the affected side.

Injury that causes deformity around the joint.

Knee pain that occurs at night or while resting.

Knee pain that persists beyond a few days.

Locking (inability to bend) the knee.

Swelling of the calf area or joint.

Signs of an infection including redness, fever, and warmth.

Any other strange symptoms.

Home Remedies for Knee Pain

You can relieve knee pain at home in several ways. Many home remedies reduce knee pain naturally and cheaply. Home remedies may help relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knees. Try the following simple home remedies to get rid of knee pain.

Giving your knees and your legs a well-deserved rest can do wonders for your knees. Rest your knee for a few days by not walking on it. The knee joint that is injured will require a certain period of time to recover, and this will also depend on the type and the extent of the injury. When your knee hurts, continuing to place pressure on it can exacerbate the pain and possibly make it worse. If knee pain is a persistent problem, it is important to reduce the stress to it whenever possible. Active damage to knees may be severe enough to force you to take the weight off the area and rest. Probably the easiest knee pain relief is to take a break from running and walking. As home treatments go, this is obviously the easiest. It is vital to let the knee recover quickly by refraining from the day-by-day activities and especially from injury prone sports activities. Minor pains can be fixed after a couple of days, while ones that are more serious need longer time.

Weight Loss

Lose weight to relieve knee pain. Obesity is the number one preventable risk factor for osteoarthritis of the knee. Too much sitting contributes to weight gain, which can cause knee pain as the excess weight of the body is funneled through the small joint. Simple weight loss can reduce stress on weightbearing joints such as the knee. Losing weight can result in reduced pain. When you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. To start burning those extra calories required for weight loss without adding additional impact to the knees, try water aerobics or cycling.

Ice and Hot Pack

Ice pack: This is probably one of the most common knee pain reliefs known to people. Since coldness clamps down the blood vessels, it can lessen swellings and numb other pain. In most cases, placing an ice on the knee joint for a couple of minutes will help reduce inflammation. Apply an ice pack or ice cubes wrapped in a towel to your knee three times a day for 20-minute intervals. Remove the ice pack for the same amount of time that you applied and put it back again on the same area. Repeat this process several times until you feel the pain ebbing off. You can use a bag of frozen fruit or vegetables to get the same effect.

Hot pack to relieve pain: Heat also works just as fine. In hot therapy, using a hot water pack to apply to the knee joints can help a lot. A hot water bottle or a heating pad, which is as hot as can be tolerated, must be used as long as the cold pack is used. Gently massaging the spur will also help in rushing up blood to the affected area and helping to reduce inflammation. Heat must be used with great judgment, do keep looking out for signs of swelling, and if you notice any swelling up, do not use any kind of heat therapy at all.

Edema is a condition where damaged tissue in your knee fills with fluid. To relieve this, apply an elasticized cloth bandage around your knee. However, you need to bear in mind that when applying such compression you need to avoid compressing the blood vessels, which supply the region and, therefore, not so tight compression is required.

Protection Braces

A knee joint that is injured needs to be protected to prevent further aggravation of the injury and allow plenty of time for the tissues to restore and regenerate. Taping and bracing is often suggested to properly support the knee. Since you would probably want to reduce friction and movement around the knee area, consider getting braces for your knee. These braces would allow you to relax the ligaments, preventing further friction in the joints and lessen the pain.

Stretching the muscles and tendons that surround the joint can help with some causes of knee pain. A good routine should be established, and following some specific suggestions will help you on your way.

When you stand or sit and have knee pain, you are in a favorable position for fluid to build up. Elevating your knee can help reduce swelling. When you are at home, lie down and place your leg up on a stack of pillows.

Physical Therapy

Do-it-yourself physical therapy can reduce knee pain in the long run by strengthening muscles and joints. Constantly exercising and helping your knees move smoothly can help alleviate the throbbing, and can set your knees to work just like before again. Physical therapy is especially helpful to those who have arthritis, rheumatism, or osteoarthritis. It helps your knees to work on their own again.

A strong leg limits the amount of stress placed on the knee. It is possible to treat knee pain with leg exercises. Do low-impact exercises that work the thigh muscles to alleviate long-term knee pain troubles. If every exercise hurts your knee, try clenching and releasing the thigh muscles while you rest.

More Home Remedies for Knee Pain

Apply a paste of wheat, castor oil and turmeric mixed in goat’s milk or clarified butter on the affected area.

Avoid squats and knee bends.

Swimming, biking, and rowing helps to shed extra weight, without affecting the knees.

Powdered seeds of omum (carom seeds) with water can be given twice a day.

Mix coconut oil with clove oil and rub this gently over the affected knee muscle to get relief from knee pains.

Include liberal amounts of ginger in your daily diet as it has excellent pain killing properties.

Maintain an ideal body weight, as even one extra pound puts a load of approximately 6 pounds on your knees.

Be physically active to keep the muscles and ligaments in the knees to remain fit.

At some point or another, knee pain is something that most of us will experience. Knee pain home remedies given here are effective in relieving pain and discomfort. So if you are experiencing the problem and need immediate relief, try any of the above home remedies for knee pain and get rid of knee pain problem. It will take some time to completely get rid of your knee pain, but it is worth the time and effort.
